The Coalition for Homeless People with a Mental Illness is a diverse group of advocates, service
providers and other concerned individuals involved with the important issues that affect the
homeless mentally ill. The group works together to search for the best ways to help individuals
and assist the responsible agencies to improve services to homeless people with a mental illness.
The Open Door Community provides shelter, meals, mail and phones, a public bathroom, a soup
kitchen, showers, clothes, and medical and foot care clinics, and engages in advocacy for the
homeless, visitation and letter-writing to prisoners and work with families of prisoners, and anti-
death penalty advocacy.
The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is a daytime resource center and safe refuge for
homeless women and children which seeks to ease the burden of homelessness and to assist in
establishing self-sufficiency by providing basic and daily necessities as well as comprehensive
education and supportive services.
The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta was founded in 1988 in response to the lack of furniture
resources for homeless people who secure housing. Today the Furniture Bank provides essential
household furniture to individuals and families moving out of homelessness, battling HIV/AIDS,
and fleeing domestic violence.
Crossroads Community Ministry works with homeless men, women and children through
developing supportive relationships and offering tangible supports to help individuals move
toward safety and self-sufficiency.
The Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception offers several outreach ministries in downtown
Atlanta. St. Francis Table feeds over 550 people every Saturday and also runs a food pantry. The
Night Shelter for men operates Nov. 1 - Mar. 31, 6 PM - 6 AM in the Church Hall. Volunteers spend
the night with the Shelter guests. The Common Ground of Hope addiction recovery ministry holds
daily open recovery meetings (Monday – Friday) at the Shrine.
The Georgia Justice Project works to ensure justice for the indigent criminally accused and their
families and to assist them in rebuilding their lives and becoming productive citizens in order to
break the cycle of crime and poverty.
Forever Family focuses on lessening the impact of a parent’s incarceration on his or her children
and their caregiver(s) by provding supportive services to the children as they, their parents,
caregivers and extended families work to remain a family.
Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty is a diverse statewide coalition of concerned
organizations and individuals working to end capital punishment in Georgia and around the world
yjand to promote greater fairness in Georgia's criminal justice system.
Friends of Prison Families
The Friends of Prison Families program helps families maintain contact with family members who
are incarcerated, conducts workshops for inmates on drug abuse, psychological problems and
social aspects of returning to family/society, enlists family members in a pre-release planning
program to help to develop job and housing packages, and works with recently released people to
identify employers who will hire people with criminal records. Contact Friends of Prison Families

The Georgia Law Center for the Homeless provides representation with attorneys and paralegals
for homeless people in civil administrative and judicial proceedings. The Law Center performs
significant community outreach to make its services available by visiting homeless shelters,
transitional housing, and community kitchens on a regular basis.
Homeless and Criminal-Justice Resources
The City of Refuge is a faith-based non-profit organization which offers resources and life-building
tools to people in poverty and individuals and families in crisis. This is accomplished through
partnerships with other nonprofits, ministries and government agencies to provide integrated
programs that span multiple areas of need – ranging from food, clothing and shelter to job training,
placement, housing, healthcare and education.
